UTEP’s Borderzine Honored by Online News Association

Borderzine, a web community for Latino student journalists at the University of Texas, El Paso, received the Online News Association’s 2012 award for non-English Projects at ONA’s annual convention in San Francisco. The website was honored for Mexodus, its semester-long bilingual reporting project about the movement of Mexican middle class families, businesses and professionals fleeing drug war violence in Mexico. Borderzine is a project of UTEP’s Department of Communication and the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies. The site was begun as a web magazine created by students as the capstone class for UTEP’s multimedia journalism degree program, and is run like a professional newsroom.
