Rural students in poverty
Public schools in rural areas of the United States face unique challenges related to funding and staffing that often limit the opportunities offered to their students. According to data from 2009, nearly one-third of American schools are classified as rural, and about 40 percent of the students who attend these schools are impoverished. The Center for American Progress has created an interactive map to show percentages of rural students in poverty in each of the 50 states.
