Our Mission

Providing resources for a noble pursuit

Edward Wasserman

Welcome to OnPoverty.org, the online meeting place for journalists who cover issues of poverty and class in the United States.

As you can see, it's a news-driven Web site, which finds and links to print, broadcast and online coverage that journalists in the field need to know about.

But it's meant to be more than that.

We want to create a place where professionals can talk with one another about covering poverty -- the obstacles and opportunities.

Looking for helpful resources to enhance your reporting? Check back frequently; we'll keep you in tune with recent studies and help you find advocacy groups. If you know of any organizations that should be added to our list, tell us! We love to hear from you.

The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit public policy organization that conducts independent research in many areas, including U.S. poverty and children and family. The goal of the organization is to provide recommendations through their research that “strengthen American democracy, foster the economic and social welfare, security and opportunity of all Americans, and secure a more open, safe and prosperous and cooperative international system.” The institution is financed through an endowment, foundations, corporations, and private individuals and is considered to be non-partisan.

The Institute also breaks its research into easy to search topics.

Annie E. Casey Foundation works to foster public policy and reform in support of the nation’s most vulnerable children and families. The foundation releases an annual report called KIDS COUNT, which tracks the welfare of children nationwide based on ten indicators of well-being. The information is broken down by state and by counties within each state.

The CATO Institute's mission is to develop and broaden public policy that takes into consideration “the traditional American principles of limited government, individual liberty, free markets and peace.”  This right-of-center think tank has done some research over the past two decades on welfare.

The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation that looks to further the discussion of health issues. While the foundation has focused mostly on the U.S., it has in recent years looked to expand into global health. It conducts its own research and is considered to be a non-partisan source of information.
