Caps eyed for sky-high prison phone rates
Phone calls are often the only way prison inmates keep in touch with family and friends. But a 15-minute call can cost as much at $17, a steep price that can force some families to choose between keeping in touch and putting food on the table. Federal regulators are considering price caps on long-distance prison phone rates. A Prison Policy Initiative report found that such a cap would reduce price-gouging and contribute to the social good.
