Women Working against Poverty: The Role of Feminist and Religious Groups in the Living Wage Movement

Studies of the contemporary living wage movement generally pay little attention to the roles of religious and feminist organizations in organizing the poor. In fact, coalitions of religious and feminist organizations contribute significantly to the movement through funding, research, and leadership. But this article argues that female organizers face special burdens because of a lack of structural support for them within the movement and a gendered expectation that their organizing work be “sacrificial.”
